(LEAD) CONFERENCE

HOW DO I APPLY?

If you are an 8th grade middle school student and have been selected to participate in LEAD you must follow the steps below to complete the application process.

  1. Print out the Student Application, fill-in all information requested, and get all required signatures.
  2. Turn in the completed application to your school’s LEAD contact or to a sponsoring Rotary Club representative as soon as possible.
  3. A LEAD representative will contact you with additional information about LEAD including the bus transportation schedule, camp rules, emergency contact phone numbers, etc.
  4. If you have been selected to attend LEAD, commitment to attend the entire two day conference is mandatory.

HOW ARE STUDENTS SELECTED FOR LEAD?

Youth participants must be middle school 8th grade students at the time of the camp and must reside within San Diego or Imperial Counties. Students are selected by their schools to participate based upon past leadership experience, future potential for leadership, ability to collaborate with others, service activities, and academics.

WHERE IS THE LEAD CONFERENCE HELD?

LEAD will take place at San Diego County Office of Education’s Camp Palomar, in San Diego County. Click on the navigation links for a Map, the Camp Layout, and Emergency Information.

IS THERE A COST TO ATTEND THE LEAD CONFERENCE?

There is no cost to the student, to the family, or to the school to attend. All costs and expenses will be fully paid by the Rotary Clubs of District 5340.

HOW DO I GET TO THE LEAD CONFERENCE?

All students will be transported to and from LEAD on professionally driven, commercial busses with current state, federal and CHP required certifications. Each students must travel to and from LEAD on their assigned bus.

WHAT DO I BRING TO THE LEAD CONFERENCE?

What to Bring to LEAD

(Please note that all personal items are brought at your own risk.)

  • A positive attitude and a sense of humor!
  • Sleeping Bag or blankets and sheets (dorms are heated) and a pillow. Camp beds have mattresses only.
  • Toiletries and other personal hygiene items – toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, etc.
  • Prescription medication(s) – must be listed on your Application
  • Bath and hand towels.
  • Walking shoes, tennis shoes, or hiking boots only. Sandals or open toed shoes are not allowed.
  • Dress is casual – jeans, tee shirts and sweat shirts. Shorts are acceptable, but may not be desired if the weather turns cold (30's at night is possible). Long pants are necessary. Don’t forget extra underwear and socks.
  • Jacket, gloves, and other warm clothes – there is a possibility that it will rain and a remote possibility that it will snow so be prepared with warm clothes.
  • Lightweight flashlight – remember fresh batteries.
  • Camera.
  • Backpacks are suggested for carrying a jacket, your Program Handbook, extra pens or pencils, snacks, and other items.
  • Travel alarm clock.
  • Phones, MP3 players, etc., may only be used at designated “free” time. If they are used at any other time, then they will be confiscated and returned at the end of camp.
