Facilitators

LEADERSHIP, ETHICS AND
DETERMINATION
(LEAD) CONFERENCE

September 25 & 26, 2010

WHY BE A LEAD FACILITATOR?

One of the great joys of being a Rotarian is to share your vision of leadership and service with young people. LEAD gives you the opportunity to participate in leadership, learning, and fellowship activities with some of the District’s finest middle school 8th grade students.

The process of facilitation involves participating in a LEAD activity with your group and guiding the group, as necessary, during that activity. Effective facilitation enables each student to participate fully in each activity, to share their point of view in an effective manner with others, and to develop skills to excel at life such as efficient communication, trust, personal growth, and teamwork.

Being a LEAD Facilitator is a unique experience for Rotarians! Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity.

HOW DO I BECOME A FACILITATOR?

There are no formal requirements to be a Facilitator. You must be a Rotarian and be interested in working with youth. The steps to become a Facilitator are as follows.

  1. Check your personal calendar against the LEAD Timeline to insure that you will be available to participate in all Facilitator activities (i.e., training, attending the LEAD conference, etc.).
  2. Enter all the relevant LEAD dates on your personal calendar.
  3. Verify that your Rotary Club will pay the registration fees for you to attend LEAD as a Facilitator.
  4. Check your name in the District Directory to insure that you have been certified by the District to work with youth. When so certified, a red, yellow, and black icon appears in your listing that says “YS” or “YC.” If you do not have this icon by your name, then you must become certified before you are allowed to participate in any youth program of this District or of your Rotary club. To become certified, you must complete and send a Youth Volunteer Affidavit  along with a check in the sum of $5.00 to Dale Bailey at the District Office (address: District 5340 Office, Attn: Dale Bailey – District Youth Protection Officer, 2247 San Diego Avenue, Suite 236, San Diego, CA 92110). Please include a note to Dale requesting that your Affidavit and background check be expedited so you can participate in LEAD this year. Additional information about the District 5340 Youth Protection Policy and becoming certified to work with youth can be found at www.rotary5340.org (click on the Youth Service link).
  5. Print the Facilitator Application, legibly fill in the information requested, sign the application, and have an officer of your Rotary Club sign the sponsorship section.
  6. Mail the completed application to Paul Pierce, LEAD Chair, P.O. Box 235080, Encinitas, CA 92023-5080 by the deadline (see the LEAD Timeline-Calendar in the left sidebar).
